Black Powder Flask, Hand Carved Wood, circa 1700's, American Colonial Period

$550.00
This Powder/Shot horn is unsigned, but the construction and overall condition is consistent with pieces from the late 1700's. This is not made of cow horn; it is rather carved out of wood. One side is flat and the end piece has been carefully cut to fit exactly inside the body of the horn and remains solidly sealed in place. The wood appears to have been coated with a black lacquer. The carving is beautiful. The plug still fits tightly and is carved in the form of an animal which appears to be either a squirrel or rabbit.

Including the plug, the horn is approx. 10 inches long. The length of the end is approx. 4 inches, widest point approx. 2 1/4 inches wide. The diameter of the spout is approx. 7/8 internal diameter. The plug is approx. 3 1/2 inches long. The leather band attached around the spout area was recently added to allow the piece to be hung on a wall. Please refer to photos for full perspective.

Always, thank you for stopping by the shop and for your interest in this piece. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you might have.
