Brass Cartridge Box Plate, Indian Wars/ Spanish American War Era, National Guard
$70.00
Collectors of antique militaria, take a look at this very nice, Brass, National Guard Cartridge Box Plate.
I found this plate in a lot of "Civil War Artifacts and Relics" purchased from an estate sale. I believe this piece is circa 1870-1890 not Civil War.
The design is referenced on page 364 of Mike O'Donnell's buckle book. The author also identifies this plate as associated with the New York National Guard, and dates it from 1870 to 1890. In addition, these plates were common on the Frazier pattern cartridge box, which was in use during the Indian Wars and the Spanish American War. This plate is oval in shape and approx. 2 1/8 inches long. It is approx. 1 1/2 inches wide at its widest point. It retains the original brass attachment. This attachment differs from a similar plate found in the same lot as it has a pin type attachment, suggesting this piece may have been used on something other than a cartridge box. For its age it remains in good condition with a warm patina, and some buildup of dirt. I have not attempted to clean it, leaving this choice to whomever purchases it. Please refer to photos for full perspective.
As always, thank you for stopping by the shop and for your interest in this piece. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you might have.
