Collectors of Classic Antique Butter Prints take a look at this interesting piece.

This is a lovely example of the Hand Made Pieces described in "Butter Prints & Molds" by Kindig on pgs. 39 - 54. This print is a hand whittled/sawn piece that was then carefully chip carved. The face of the print is suggestive that the design was never finished. I am sure there is a story, lost to time, that lies buried in this beautiful print.

Circa 1830-1850; this lovely butter print was formed using a 1 3/4" thick maple wood block, which was hand formed into a round print it has a mortise mounted shaved peg handle. The design on the face of the print is primitively carved, featuring a central fruit design with five radial carved leaves. The upper portion appears complete and lower appears unfinished, though perhaps it was intentional. The rim band was chip carved in a checker and notch pattern.

The print face measures approx. 4 1/4 inches in diameter. The print stands approx. 5 3/4 inches tall measured from the base to the tip of the handle. There is a crack that extends across print and a 1/4-inch chip along rim. Please carefully review photos for full perspective.
