Candle Stick, Brass, Push Up, Early to Mid 1800's, Likely English Made
$57.00
Lovers of Antique home/table wares, take a look at this nice, solid brass Push up style Candle Stick. The lifter on this candle stick still functions and if desired, it can be used or simply displayed.
The style of this candlestick suggests it originates from the early to mid 1800's. There is evidence of a past early repair, the joint where the base links to the stick was soldered and some of the solder is evident in that joint. Also, the "window" where the lifter slides is uneven and the arm the lifter is attached to is a piece of forged metal. My best guess is that this is a period repair, done by a local blacksmith. The candlestick was likely imported from England and therefore a more valued piece than the tin-based hog scrapers of the same time period so, repair of any damage would be desired. It makes this an interesting piece of history. If you run your fingers around the edge of the base you will note some very slight warping, it does not affect the stance of the candle stick, the lip also has some warping that occurred over time due to heat. This represents wear appropriate for age and use. The metal has a warm patina, and the presentation is very nice. This would be a great accent for a table or display area. Please review photos for full perspective. There are no makers marks or stamps visible.
The Candlestick stands 6 3/4 inches tall, the base is approx. 3 3/4 inches in diameter, external diameter of the lip is approx. 1 1/4 inches, the candle opening is approx. 3/4 inch in diameter.
As always, thank you for stopping by the shop and for your interest in this piece. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you might have.
