Early 1800's, Colonial Period, Carved Black Powder Horn
$175.00
This American Colonial period black powder horn was more likely used in support of everyday life rather than for military purposes. Flintlock and later percussion rifles were a necessary part of early American life, used to protect livestock and families from predators, and supplement food supplies through hunting. The horn has a warm, almost olive colored patina that blends into the natural black of the horn toward the carved spout. There is one very small area of surface erosion on the body of the horn where it joins with the wooden end cap. The end cap is a beautifully turned piece of dark wood in a stepped spiral that ends in a 1-inch-tall newel. Please see photos for full perspective.
The horn is approx. 13 inches long from the end of the hand carved spout to the tip of the turned newel, not factoring in the curve of the horn. The end cap is approx. 3 inches in diameter, the external diameter of the spout is approx. 3/8 inch. The horn is solid and could be used if this is desired. Please note: display stand used for photo's is not included.
