Early 1800's, Hand Carved Black Powder Horn, with Plug Constructed as a Powder Measure

$85.00
I am sure this interesting horn has a story locked inside and I wish that that story could be told. The style and construction of this horn is consistent with everyday pieces from the late 1700-early 1800's. The end cap was hand carved; it has a hand carved plug with a hole in it to suspend a carry strap. I am not 100% sure what the plug is made of it almost looks like it could be bone or a piece of horn. It appears that originally it was removable to facilitate filling, but it does not want to move now, and I am not about to force it. The spout end of the horn has a carved band, and the horn was flared to accommodate a plug that is formed from a wooden stem attached to a small piece of horn that would function a powder measure. These elements make this a pretty unique piece, I have never encountered one with this style of plug/powder measure. The horn is in good condition with a lovely, aged patina, it has an attached leather carry cord which is old but not original to the piece. This horn would be nice addition to any collection of early American Black Powder Horns and if desired could be used. Please refer to photos for full perspective.

The horn is approx. 9 inches long, not including the curvature of the horn. The endcap is approx. 2 inches in diameter. The outer diameter of the spout is approx. 1/2 inch, the internal diameter is approx. 1/4 inch. The plug/powder measure is approx. 2 inches long and the diameter of measure opening is approx. 1/2 inch.

As always, thank you for stopping by the shop and for your interest in this piece. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any question you may have.
