Created by Jemez Pueblo Artist, Delia Gachupin, this piece is entitled, "Bear Fetish". It is formed from red clay and is hand painted. The design features a cutout bear fetish with a raised bear fetish on the top. The raised fetish, followed by hand painted bear tracks frame the top of the cut out. There are wonderful black, white and turquoise painted traditional designs that make this piece beautiful viewed from any angle.
This stunning piece is approx. 6 inches tall, the width (measured across where the bear fetish is) is approx. 3 3/4 inches, the diameter of the base is approx. 1 7/8 inches. This piece is in very good to excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. No paint loss and the colors are vibrant and crisp. Please refer to photos for full perspective.
Delia Gachupin was born in 1965 and has been making pottery since 1975. She specializes in redware bowls, vases and ornaments. She uses acrylic paints and fires her pottery in a kiln. She gathers her materials from the Reservation and hand coils all of her pots. She was taught by her grandmother Louisa Toledo. Her mother is Bernice Gachupin and her father is Steven Gachupin. She is the sister of Bertilla Toya and Kathleen Lucero. She shows at the Santo Domingo Arts & Crafts Show and Santa Clara Feast Day. Her pieces are featured in several Santa Fe Galleries.
