Kachina, Manangya (Lizard), Artist Signed, Small

$65.00
Lovers of Pueblo Nations Kachina Dolls, take a look at this, small but intricately detailed and painted "Lizard" Kachina.

Standing barely 4 3/4 inches tall, this doll features a beautifully painted mask, detailed hand painted leather kilt, accents of fur, split leather and bird feathers. It is carved from Cottonwood and signed on the base by the artist. I could not find who this artist is. The widest point of the body is approx. 3 1/8 inches wide and approx. diameter of the base is 2 1/8 inches. I am not 100% sure this is "Lizard", the red ears, painted teeth in the snout and what look to be painted reptile figures on the mask suggest Lizard. The feathers on the head are suggestive of "Crazy Rattle" and the hands have drilled holes which could have held reeds, but the facial motif is not consistent with my knowledge of Crazy Rattle".

The book by Harold S. Colton "Hopi Kachina Dolls", pg 36, #69 describes Manangya Kachina Lizard Kachina as: Third mesa, a brown case mask, red ears with central snout, Kilt, Sash, Fox skin, and carrying a rattle. The Lizard Kachina is said to be of Zuni origin, it is intended to represent the spirit of the Crotophytus lizard. Intended to represent the soul’s search of for awareness. Symbol of conservation and agility. The Lizard Kachina is one of the Fighting Kachinas, the group of dancers that chastise the clowns for their un-Hopi behavior during ceremonial dances.
