Lovers of Early Americana, take a close look at this very interesting Mortar and Pestel.

Dating from between 1750 and 1800 this piece is a two handled, carved walnut chalice mortar. The mortar was hand carved and formed in an hour glass shape. The body was decorated with pinwheel “hex” designs, geometric patterns and a floral spray that reaches from the base to the mid section on both sides. The Mortar is approx 6 1/2 inches tall, External diameter is approx. 4 inches. The pestle was whittled at a later date and was created to match the chalice, it is approx 6 1/2 inches long. The body of the chalice/mortar is covered with what would originally have been stunning design work. Though still visible, the art work has worn down over the more than 3 centuries since it was carved. The piece originated in the mid Atlantic Sates region of the US and is very possibly Pennsylvania German in origin. Please refer to photos for full perspective.
