Native American Made Beaded Knife Sheath with 7th Calvary Insignia Drop and Forged Knife
$550.00
Based on condition of the hardened hide and patina of the beads, this piece likely dates from the early 20th century. Construction and design are consistent with Native American Plains Nations Reservation era. The body of the sheath is formed from a split hide, possibly buffalo, that has been hardened on the inside. It is laced not stitched with strips of split leather; the lip is laced with waxed cord. The face of the sheath is covered in bead work, using a red, white and blue US theme, the central figure being the number 7, done in yellow. The pattern is framed in a geometric pattern done in green and white. Hanging from the tip is a stamped metal disc with the insignia of the 7th calvary, company D. It has a narrow belt loop attached to the top which feels like it was made of brain tanned deer skin. This loop has accumulated dirt and stains appropriate for age and use and has dried over time. The trade knife fits perfectly and could be original to the sheath. There are no makers marks or stamps on the blade, it appears to have been hand forged, the wooden haft of the knife has a split in the wood and a square headed nail hammered into the end. Please carefully review photos for full perspective.
The body of the sheath is approx. 8 1/2 inches long and approx. 2 inches wide at the top opening tapering to 1/4 wide at the tip. The trade knife is approx. 8 3/4 inches long. The blade, including the metal collar is approx. 5 inches long and 7/8 inch wide at the widest point. The wooden haft is approx. 4 inches long and 1 1/4 inches wide at the widest point. Total length of the sheath from the top of the belt loop to the bottom of the drop is approx. 11 1/2 inches. This piece would be a wonderful addition to any collection. With care this piece could be gently used, if daily use is desired, I would recommend replacement of the deer skin belt loop.
