Nesting Hen, 19th Century Porcelain, Possible Staffordshire
$135.00
Collectors of antique nesting hens, take a look at this interesting piece.
The design motif of this hen is a classic Victorian Staffordshire pattern. The porcelain china is a bit rough leading me to question if this is a period copy of a Staffordshire piece. I believe it dates from the Victorian period but have no way of validating the maker. The motif features a lovely, multi-colored, hand-decorated design. The surface has measurable paint loss, likely due to age and use. The hen sits acceptably in its basket weave base, but it is not the "perfect fit" I would expect if those two pieces were originally intended for each other. It would function well as a candy dish or display piece. I have priced this piece based on all of the above, it remains a nice addition to any collection.
The piece measures approx. 6 1/2 inches long and approx. 5 3/8 inches wide. It stands approx. 5 3/4 inches from the base to the peak of the hen's crown. The base of the basket weave "nest" is approx. 4 1/4 inches long and 3 1/4 inches wide. Please refer to photos for full perspective.
