Circa 1883 - 1886, this is a lovely Bretby Art Pottery, hen on nest tureen. Featuring finely detailed plumage, bright enamel colors with green accents. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. Evidence of very minimal fade and wear to paint, appropriate for age and use. This piece remains in very good condition and could easily be used as a center piece for table service or simply an eye-catching display piece. It was manufactured in England.

Bretby Art Pottery was an art pottery studio founded in 1882 by Henry Tooth and William Ault in Woodville, Derbyshire, where production began on 25 October 1883. In 1884, samples of their product won a gold medal at the London International and Universal Exhibition, which was held at the Crystal Palace. The partnership between Ault and Tooth was dissolved on 1 January 1887 when William Ault set up his own pottery manufacturing company.

The tureen is approx. 8 5/8inches long and approx. 6 3/4 inches wide. It stands approx. 8 1/4 inches from the base to the peak of the hen's tail. The base of the basket weave "nest" is approx. 6 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide. The makers mark "Bretby" and England, along with the number 936 is stamped into the fine porcelain of the base.
