President James Garfield, Colorized Stippled Etching

$45.00
This interesting piece is a beautiful reminder of a man sometimes referred to as "Americas Forgotten President".

Just like Lincoln, James Garfield rose from humble beginnings, born to poor parents who lived in a log cabin. He rose to serve as a college president, a nine-time congressman, and military general before his election to the United States presidency in 1881. As a General in the Union army he fought in the battles of Shiloh (1862) and Chickamauga (1863). As the 20th U.S. president, Garfield was elected during a time of intense turmoil within the Republican party on a platform of civil service reform and civil rights. Ironically his lofty goals of restoring the Union during the period known as reconstruction were cut short when he was shot by a disgruntled fellow republican in July 1881.

Stippled Etching is a printmaking technique that combines etching and engraving. The the design is made up of countless small dots or flecks, producing softly graded tones. It was a popular reproductive technique in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when it was often used in conjunction with the crayon manner, from which it derived. Both were rendered obsolete by lithography.

This piece is encased in a clear plastic sleeve and I did not want to break the seal on the sleeve to open it to take pictures. So the reflections you see in the photo's are due to this plastic protective sleeve. I is approx. 7 1/2 inches in length by 4 7/8 inches wide. The etched side has very crisp coloring, the back side of the piece shows some minimal loss to the thick "card stock" on which it was printed. Over all, for its age it is in excellent condition. It is unsigned.
