Revolutionary War Era, Original Owner Etched Black Powder Horn, from Collection of Joseph Musso

$225.00
Own a piece of early American History, purchased at an estate sale of known collector, Joseph Musso. A very nice American Revolutionary War Era piece, featuring a beautifully hand carved spout, it retains its original carved wood end cap and forged square headed nails that hold the end cap in place. The original owner etched a series of floral designs all over the body of the horn. These designs were scratched not deeply carved and the darkening of color of the horn, a patina of age, make the designs difficult to see. The designs are nicely executed and very detailed, it is possible the horn could be cleaned which might make the artwork more visible. I chose not to do that, leaving any decision to whomever choses to purchase this horn.
The plug that was/is in the spout was broken off; I am choosing to leave that as found. There is something remaining inside the horn that sounds like it could be powder. The horn has a leather carry strap, split leather is wrapped around the area behind the spout with evidence of age and some mold. Attached to that older winding is a length of split leather that appears contemporary, suggesting that this horn could have been used recently. The piece is approx. 11 ¾ inches long, not including the curvature of the horn. The endcap oval in shape and approx.3 ½ inches long and 2 ½ inches wide. Please carefully review photos for full perspective.

As always, thank you for stopping by the shop and for your interest in this piece. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.
