This beautiful Black Ware pot likely dates from the early 1940's. The artist Petra Montoya Gutierrez, was a member of an extended family of well-known potters on the Santa Clara pueblo, born in 1906 she passed away in 1992. She began making pottery in the 1940s, learning from her mother-in-law and is featured in the book; "7 Families in Pueblo Pottery" released January 1, 1974, by Maxwell Museum of Anthropology. Her pieces are highly prized and sought after by collectors of Native American Pueblo Pottery.

This lovely pot stands approx. 3 5/8 inches tall, the widest point of the body is approx. 5 1/4 inches wide. Internal diameter of the lip is approx. 4 1/4 inches and diameter of the base is approx. 3 inches. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. There is a small amount of scuffing and scratching, mostly in the area of the base, appropriate for age and use. The motif is a detailed representation of Avanyu or the Water Serpent, it encircles the entire pot. Please carefully review photos for full perspective.
