Scabbard for an Enfield Saber Bayonet, British Pattern 1856, Civil War Relic
$150.00
This original scabbard would have been used with a British Pattern 1856 .577 caliber Enfield Infantry Short Rifle, commonly called the “Two Band/Sgt’s Model” Rifle. Used extensively by both Union and Confederate armies, soldiers would attach the bayonets these scabbards carried to the ends of their rifles prior to battle. These additions to their rifles provided additional support when loading a rifle quickly was impossible. This scabbard has evidence of extensive use, in the form of denting in the brass on both ends. The leather is solid though it has the crazing typical of aged pieces. The brass fittings remain securely attached and the stitching that secures the leather is sound with no breaks. The piece has a leather strap, possibly original to the piece that would have been used to secure it to a belt. Please refer to photos for full perspective.
The scabbard is approx. 23 5/8 inches long, width across the top is approx. 1 5/8 inches, the scabbard tapers to approx., 1 inch across the bottom.
