Snuff Box, Mid Victorian Period
$65.00
Collectors of Antique Snuff Boxes, take a look at this piece.
This "coffin" shaped snuff box is in very nice condition for its age, possibly constructed of horn. The hinges are functional and without damage, however over time the lid has warped enough that the box does not close completely. My best guess is that this piece dates from the Mid 1800's, though it may be older. Whether it is European or US made, I do not know.
This little box measures approx 3 1/8 inches long, 1 1/2 inches wide at the widest point of the lid. Closed it is approx 1 inch tall. The internal depth is approx 6/8 inch. The box is in good overall condition for its age. The lid is slightly warped, enough that it will not completely close, there is one small chip on one corner of the top. The inside is clean of residue, revealing the irregularities of the original material used to make it. There are scratches and wear marks consistent with age and use. Please refer to photo's for full perspective.
What is a Snuff Box?
Any powder that has been prepared for sniffing can be considered ‘snuff’, however snuff most commonly refers to powdered tobacco. By the 1700s, snuff was the tobacco product favored by the nobility. Throughout European and colonial history in the 18th and 19th centuries, the snuff box was considered an essential personal possession, made in a variety of materials, from metals of all kinds to horn or enameled wood. A very important feature of a snuff box was that it had to be as close to airtight as possible.
