Wafer/Cookie or Butter Print, dated 1919, Chip Carved, Double Sided, European Style Carving

$400.00
This fascinating, Hand Carved, American Primitive was possibly used as a pastry, wafer/cookie print. It is possible it was also used as a butter print, but the intricacy of the carving suggests this would not have been very successful. The pattern handle and type are similar to European prints, but the piece is formed from walnut wood suggests it was carved by a ethnic immigrant within United States. The print is formed from a single piece, sawn and chip carved. It features one round print and secondary square print on the top of the handle. The handle is formed with arched braces. The design on each face is made up of geometric patterns, divided into square blocks with various designs (center group of three blocks has owner's initials).

The date 1919 and the letters INK (possibly the makers initials) are carved on the top of the print. The face is more oval than round and measures approx. 4 inches across the widest and 3 3/4 inches across the narrowest. The print is approx. 2 1/2 inches tall. The small print on the handle is approx. 1 3/4 inch by 1 1/2 inch. Please refer to photos for full perspective.
